Interview with Sherri Dupree-Bemis of Eisley & Perma

(Family photo by the talented Alex Modisette)
Sherri is by far one of the sweetest gals to ever grace this planet. And to make this world even more sweeter, she and her husband Max created two adorable little ladies and live a beyond cute life! I have had the privilege of interviewing her a few years back, when this site was mostly a music blog. This year, while still sharing those who create musical ear candy, I also want to show the world beautiful, stylish and epic humans that make the world a more lovely place to live. I have always looked  up to Sherri as a gal who is fearless and is not afraid to be herself. I hope to be a fraction of the amazing mom she is one day! I love watching her family grow and the love that they put out there in the universe for us to enjoy! If it was possible to be so sweet that  you could get a toothache by being around a family, the Bemis’ would be that family! I hope you enjoy this little interview where Sherri shares her love of style, makeup, her home and her family. (Also….click the link below to here a song so so cute by Perma. If you are unaware, Perma is a band that Sherri and Max created together….and it is so sweet!)

What is your favorite hair color that you have had and what brands of color do you like to use? Why?

I’ve pretty much tried every color over the years, and there are a ton of amazing products for ‘mermaid’ hair now. One of my favorite new’ish ones is Overtone because it’s a tinted-conditioner and it works super great on my hair. But if you want a quick grab, you really can’t go wrong with a jar of ManicPanic. Both are vegan stains so they’re super safe and don’t harm your hair.

It’s known now, thanks to social media that Lucy is following in your footsteps when it comes to hair colors. Do you have a favorite color story about her also loving the ever changing hair colors?Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 6.10.45 PM

She has a mind of her own, that is for sure! She asks for it when she wants it and tells me which color. The first time she asked for pink hair (like mine) I didn’t hesitate to grant her wish!
As I said, the stains we use are kid-friendly so I never see any harm in letting her express herself through her hair in that way. I see a lot of parents letting their kids try it now and it makes me so happy. Kids should allowed to have a voice no matter how small it is.
My mom was awesome about that when I was growing up; I remember the first time I stained my hair pink as a kid, really and truly feeling like I was being allowed to be myself and that’s so important to me with my girls. It’s just hair!

Style

You are known for your quirky style! You always make everything you wear so so cute, from jeans to dresses. Do you have a favorite “look” or go to style?Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 6.18.17 PM

Thank you! I used to put a lot more time and thought into my outfits each day but since I’ve had the girls I’m not as good about it. It isn’t even that I don’t have the time, my interest just waned a bit as my priorities shifted to different things. My biggest go-to when getting dressed is comfort. Absolutely no exceptions! You can absolutely be cute and comfortable at the same time. I love shift and smock-style dresses with knee socks and Converse. That’s a staple. Or black skinnies, a cozy t shirt and a flannel or quirky vintage sweater if I need warmth. Easy as pie.

Do you have favorite designers or stores you like to shop at?

I’m such a sucker for feeling like I ‘found’ the unique piece so I’m a big thrifter. Plus, I’m not a big spender when it comes to clothes. If a dress is more than $30 I’m like “meh…”. I do have a crush on certain quirky brands like ‘Lazy Oaf’ and ‘The White Pepper’ and splurge on their items sometimes when I’m feeling saucy. I do love high fashion (especially photography) and it all totally has its place and is important in inspiring creativity but as far as actually owning or wearing it, I’m not the it girl.

Do you have a favorite line of makeup that you use?Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 6.01.15 PM

I mix and match drugstore and beauty store products like mad. Any maybelline or cover girl mascara, I’m all about. I love LUSH colour supplement foundations and really noticed a change in my skin when I began using it about 3 years ago. I love Sephora all day waterproof eyeliner pen! Use it everyday. And Tarte cheek stains. I have like, four of them. Not really a lipstick gal but I love any lip stain.

What is your daily makeup routine? ps. you pull the “cat-eye” off perfectly. Mega jealous.Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 6.02.03 PM

That Sephora eyeliner pen is super quick and it’s my go to. I never spend more than 5-10 minutes on my makeup each day. Cat eye has been my thing since I got into makeup as a young girl and I never got over it! I love old movies so I think it stems from that.

What fashion advice would you give to the gals out there wanting to express themselves through style?

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 6.11.35 PM
I’m a Southern girl and a little old school so I’m the “modest is hottest” type but it’s like…the more clothes you’re wearing the more fun you’re having, right? Haha! My motto is “If you like it, wear it”.
Wear the crazy-patterned dress you love but won’t wear because you think people will judge, wear the glitter-shoes, wear the black lipstick! Who cares what dudes think, who cares what other girls think? The right people will love you because you’re being yourself and that’s what you want. I also absolutely refuse to believe anyone who says “I like that but I couldn’t pull it off”. Even with hair color. Just by doing it and embracing it, you’re pulling it off. No reason to live on this earth and die without having had enjoyed yourself in the small things.

 Home

You have the cutest house I have ever witnessed! Let’t talk about that!
What is your favorite room in your house?

Probably our library which doubles as our dining room/art room for the kids. My husband and I are both book collectors and he’s a comic writer (as well as musician) so it’s sort of ridiculous. It has all the best things; books, toys, markers, drawing paper and a giant wooden table! We eat there together and play. I hung a bunch of outdoor garden-style string lights and we have a bunch of our favorite artists art on the walls. It’s so fun and cheerful and inspiring. I try to make every space in our house a cozy spot that makes you feel joyful, warm and inspired.

You have an amazing collection of dolls on display. Do you have a favorite in your collection?

I’ve always loved old dolls and always collected them. They’ve never been “creepy” to me, just super cool! I love weird Japanese toys and figures, so we have a lot of both mixed in. Also, almost everything we have is available for the girls to play with except for a few really-collectible prices. I never wanted to be the “look but don’t touch” house. What’s the fun in that??

What do you love most about your home?
6a00d8358081ff69e2019affb3009c970c-800wi

The love that builds it up and holds it together. You can sense when a house has love in it and around it and coursing through it and I believe ours has that.

Do you have a favorite memory of your house up until now?

There’s been a few I’d rather forget! As a home owner of a 1930’s home you’re gonna deal with some super lame stuff at times! We had a super gargantuan plumbing leak a year after we moved in; were talking the ceiling raining down upon us as we ran screaming for trash cans to catch the water! Haha but it all makes for memories. The two most beautiful moments in the house have been the birth of my two daughters. Both were home births and both were painfully beautiful…and painful. Haha!

Family

You and Max have the cutest family! Such a beautiful couple with the two most adorable little girls ever!! What would you say the biggest blessing is when it comes to your family?

Having people that will love me and be there for me no matter what happens or where life takes us. I have no words for how thankful I am for all of them! It takes constant work and dedication every single day to build a happy family and everyone has their part and everyone’s part is important. My husband and I strive to build our life and family on love and kindness. Patience, forgiveness, empathy, passion, creativity. It’s everything! We have to lead by example for our kids so they can inspire it in their lives as they grow older.

If you could describe your family in one word what would it be…

MAX: true

What advice would you have to the moms out there?

Trust your “momstincts”. They’re real. They’re everything. They’re always right. It’s your supernatural super-power and it will guide you!
Also, be easy on yourself. If your kid will only eat a pop tart for dinner two nights in a row or you’re sick and they watch cartoons all day; you’re not failing. Your kids just need your unconditional love, not for you to be hard on yourself.
