“20 Questions” with Jordan Pundik of New Found Glory

When I choose the people I want to interview, I always think of two things. One is how amazingly talented they are. And Two is how much of an epic personality they must have. Jordan Pundik is hands down a great candidate in both of these categories. Having been a fan of New Found Glory for years now, this interview was special to me. This week the band kicks of a fall tour with Alkaline Trio and H2O, which will be a awesome I am quite sure of it. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I have.

I present to you, “20 Questions” with Jordan Pundik! Enjoy!

1. When did you know that you had officially fallen in love with music?

I guess I realized I fell in love with music at a very young age. I was probably 13 or 14 years old and would watch 120 minutes on MTV every night. That’s how I heard of Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana, Superchunk, Sparklehorse, etc.
2. What would you consider your “TOP 5” favorite albums in your life thus far?

Top 5 thus far in my life My Bloody Valentine “loveless”, Sugar “copper blue”, Dinosaur Jr “where you been”,
Rocket From The Crypt “scream Dracula scream”, and
Descendents “somery”

3. What was the very first record you ever purchased with your own money as a kid? Do you still enjoy listening to it?

First album I ever bought with my own hard earned money from Subway was HOLE “live through this” and Ride “nowhere”… Both were on cassette. I’m not that old OK!?!

4. What would you consider the BEST LIVE SHOW you have ever had the joy of witnessing?

Best live “show” would have to be Refused. They played a tiny club called Cheers in Miami that maybe held 150 people. There was a small high stage in the corner and they just went wild. We played our first shows there as well.

5. Who is your biggest musical influence?

Bob Mould

6. If you could be in any other band, past or present, what band would you choose and why?

I think I’d want to be in Old Crow Medicine Show. I wish I could write songs the way they do. I think they are tremendous song writers. They are so good at what they do and so good at their instruments ..unlike me
… they always said I had a voice for blue grass though.. Hehehe

7. Which New Found Glory song is the most meaningful to you? What is your favorite lyric from that song?

For me it would be the song “sonny” from Sticks and Stones. It was written after the passing of my grandfather. My favorite lyric would be “pictures fade away but memory is forever”. Death is a hard thing to deal with and having the memory of the people you care about that have passed, will last longer than anything else material.

8. I am sure you have had many memorable moments throughout the years. Is there a favorite NFG moment that you have?

Favorite NFG moment for me would have to be when we toured with Green Day. 2 months in the US and one month in UK/EU. Best dudes in a big band.

9. What are you most looking forward to with this next tour with Alkaline Trio?.

Most looking forward to touring with them again and hanging. We’ve known them for so long. One of our very first tours was NFG, saves the day, alk 3, and face to face headlining..good times

10. What advice would you give to anyone looking to pursue a career in the music industry?

Don’t be a dick and don’t believe you deserve everything to be handed to you easily. It’s a rough music world and a million bands and a million critics. Just do what makes you happy and do what is meaningful to you.

( this is where the silliness really begins)

11. If Hollywood made a movie based on your life, who would you like to play the part as YOU? What genre movie would it be?

For lack of trying I guess Quentin  Tarantino. But the QT when he was in dusk til dawn. Not the weird bloated QT as of late. I’d like it to be a dark comedy ala Royal Tenenbaums or Life Aquatic.

12. Let’s say that movie becomes a huge hit and you become the topic of all the tabloid magazines. What would you like those headlines to read?

NERD! BABBLING, TALKS WITH HIS HANDS TOO MUCH IDIOT! BOOOORIIINNG!

13.I see that you have an MXPX tattoo. I too have one of that amazing band as well. What is the story behind that specific tattoo?

I got the tattoo a few days before New Years like 08. I knew I was flying out to Seattle to hang with tom and his wife for nye and it was a surprise tattoo. We call it my tommy tattoo. Since then he has gotten a nfg tattoo. It’s a teddy bear with a NFG shirt on holding drum sticks.

14. What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

My biggest guilty pleasure is friggin ice cream and milkshakes!

15. What trend in music and/or fashion would you like to see disappear?

Crab core.

16. If you stumbled upon a time machine in your back yard, what time would you travel to and what would you do there?

Ha! I’d relive the 80s. Go to shows buy toys to bring back etc..

17. I imagine NFG being a band full of pranksters on tour! Is this true? If so what is the best prank to date?

Best prank would be to set your goals. They have toured with us a bunch but it was the last show of the tour in Tuscon and while they played we hid on side stage and started launching fire works, bottle rockets, smoke bombs etc onto stage. It looked like a war happened. Haha! It was only a small fire that started.
18. You are both a collector of tattoos AND a tattoo artist. What is your favorite tattoo on YOU, and your favorite that you have tattooed on another person?

My favorite tattoo would be my totem of dogs on my shin. They all dead now but those little guys were my dawgs for lyfe. Miss them. Favorite I’ve done on someone was a traditional lighthouse on the top of a thigh and then an all black “hank the pigeon” from a wonder years album on a guys calve.
19. Which song would you pick to be the soundtrack to your life at this moment in time?

Wagon Wheel by old crow re incarnated by Darius Rucker. Seriously.

20. What makes you come alive?

The sea, surfing, my wife, my kids, good beer and sour gummy candy.
